What is the meaning of Aikido?
The word Aikido in Japanese is made up of three characters, or kanji. The first is “Ai” which means “meet, come together, harmonize.” The second kanji is “Ki” which means “mind, soul, spirit.” In the larger context, “Ki” refers to the spirit of the universe and not just the spirit of human beings. The third and last character is “Do” which means “the way,” to signify that the study of Aikido involves physical practice melded with philosophical examination over a long term. These three Japanese kanji “Ai-Ki-Do,” therefore, mean the way of harmonizing with the universe.
Can I start beginner classes anytime?
Yes, as a beginner you can start at anytime in our school. The great thing about our school is there are a number of black belts—so usually you will get some level of one on one attention with a black belt to get started (which is a great way to learn).
How many times a week would I go and what are all the costs involved?
I would suggest that you go at least two times a week to get Aikido into your blood. Three times would be perfect. You can go more than that… but in order to ease into it, three times seems like a good number. (Although you can go to all 8 classes per week for the same price.) Our monthly dues are $80. You will at some point need to get a gi (training uniform). You can use an old gi from previous study, or buy one through our school—which is about $40. To get started, though, just wear comfortable clothes that you can sweat in. I would suggest a light set of jogging pants and a t-shirt is good enough to start.
The only other cost is at the beginning of the year; there is a $50 fee to register your practice with the national organization (USAF).
There are no other costs. The dojo is not for profit; we try to minimize other costs to make the school as accessible to train as possible.
